But through much of his administration, he seemed destined for a much less exalted ranking. Entrusted with guiding the nation through civil war, he was beset from the start with criticism from all sides. Some charged him with moral cowardice for initially insisting that an end to slavery was not one of his wartime goals; others accused him of overstepping his constitutional powers; still others blamed him for military reverses in the field. But as Union forces moved toward victory, Lincoln's eloquent articulation of the nation's ideals and his eventual call for an end to slavery gradually invested him with a saintly grandeur. Following his assassination in 1865, that grandeur became virtually unassailable. The original version of this portrait served as a template for artist George P. A. Healy's large painting, The Peacemakers, depicting Lincoln in consultation with three of his main military advisers at the end of the Civil War. But Healy recognized that the template made for a fine portrait in its own right. Eventually he did three replicas of it, including this one, commissioned by Lincoln's friend Elihu Washburne, and another one, once owned by Lincoln's son Robert, which hangs today in the White House. Not only did he guide the US through the bloodshed and heartache of the Civil War, but he found time to try his hand at invention. Though the invention was never used, it shows the genius and varied interests of President Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln is the only U.S. President to invent and patent something. As a teenager, Lincoln took a boatload of merchandise down the Mississippi River from New Salem to New Orleans. At one point the boat got stuck and was set free only after a great deal of effort. In later years, while traveling on the Great Lakes, Lincoln's ship ran into a sandbar. These two experiences inspired Lincoln to invent. Lincoln received a patent (#6,469) for "A Device for Buoying Vessels Over Shoals" on May 22, 1849. The invention consists of a set of bellows attached to the hull of a ship just below the water line. On reaching a shallow place, the bellows are filled with air and the vessel, thus buoyed, is expected to float clear.

Lincoln helped end slavery in the nation and helped keep the American Union from splitting apart during the war. Lincoln thus believed that he proved to the world that democracy can be a lasting form of government. Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, second inaugural address, and many of his other speeches and writings are classic statements of democratic beliefs and goals. In conducting a bitter war, Lincoln never became bitter himself. He showed a nobility of character that has worldwide appeal. Lincoln, a Republican, was the first member of his party to become President. He was assassinated near the end of the Civil War and was succeeded by Vice President Andrew Johnson. Lincoln was the first U.S. President to be assassinated. The American people knew little about Lincoln when he became President. Little in his past experience indicated that he could successfully deal with the deep differences between Northerners and Southerners over slavery. Lincoln received less than 40 per cent of the popular vote in winning the presidential election of 1860. But by 1865, he had become in the eyes of the world equal in importance to George Washington. Through the years, many people have regarded Lincoln as the greatest person in United States history. During the Civil War, Lincoln's first task was to win the war. He had to view nearly all other matters in relation to the war. It was "the progress of our arms," he once said, "upon which all else depends." But Lincoln was a peace-loving man who had earlier described military glory as "that attractive rainbow, that rises in showers of bloodthat serpent's eye that charms to destroy." The Civil War was by far the bloodiest war in U.S. history. In the Battle of Gettysburg, for example, the more than 45,000 total casualties (people killed, wounded, captured, or missing) exceeded the number of casualties in all previous American wars put together.
